VENASEAL™

The latest FDA approved product to become available for endovenous ablation.
It is NTNT technology using cyanoacrylate glue to close veins.

How It Works

It uses a catheter to apply cyanoacrylate glue to the vein walls. This sounds simple but is not. As opposed to all other medical superglue, which has to be applied to a dry surface, this glue activates when wet. Therefore it has to be put into a wet vein in the inactive dry form and applied after the delivery catheter has been pulled back. If the glue gets wet on the tip of the catheter it will glue it shut and to the vein wall.

Aftercare

Patients can resume normal activities as soon as they feel like it, usually later that day or the next.
Compression garments do NOT have to be worn afterwards.
Pain medications stronger than Tylenol, Advil or Aspirin are rarely if ever needed.
An ultrasound has to be completed in a few days to make sure the vein has properly closed and no deep vein clots are present.

Limitations

It is so new, insurance companies still consider it investigational, despite the overwhelming scientific evidence that the FDA has approved.
Only a small amount can be used at one time. This usually enough to do one long vein. There may be enough to treat another short vein.
