How can destroying a vein help it drain?

There are two systems of veins: Superficial and Deep:

Superficial veins (outside the muscle layer) are not essential, but when they flow backwards, they are a problem. These can be eliminated by various ways from surgical removal to damage with heat or closing with glue. This lets the other normal veins drain the tissues properly.

Deep veins (inside the muscle layer) are essential to proper vein emptying. These may get blocked by clot or compressed by surrounding anatomy. These need to be opened up with angioplasty balloons and stents.
