More than 50 percent of Americans suffer with these unsightly spider and varicose veins, and wish to get rid of the discomfort they cause as well as improve their appearance.

It can be difficult to enjoy the warm months of summer when you’re too embarrassed to wear a pair of shorts. If you have clusters of colorful veins under the surface or protruding from your skin, you aren’t alone. Noticeable unhealthy vein clusters that look like a spider web of veins on your skin aren’t just unattractive, they can also be extremely uncomfortable or even painful for both men and women alike.. At Vein Specialists of the Carolinas, we are proud to offer Sclerotherapy as a less-invasive way to get rid of your spider veins.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive procedure used to treat your unsightly veins. Traditionally, it was only used to treat small spider veins, but we are now able to treat some larger varicose veins with advanced techniques like the ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy.

This treatment takes place entirely in-office and will begin with your specialist injecting a sclerosing medication into your affected veins. At Vein Specialists of the Carolinas we will determine the right sclerosing agent for your specific vein problems. The solution works by attacking your vein’s lining, causing it to seal shut and gradually break down and disappear. This treatment also allows your nearby health blood vessels to receive a steady flow of blood, which in turn improves your circulation.

What Can You Expect at Your Session?

Typically a sclerotherapy session is an easy and pain-free treatment, but some patients may experience some slight discomfort or itching. The session generally lasts about 30 minutes and patients are able to immediately return to daily activities with compression garments on. You may notice some slight bruising, but this should subside within a few days.

While you’re able to return to school or work right after your session and resume your normal daily activities, for optimal results we suggest limiting strenuous exercises, extreme sun exposure and hot baths for the first few days. The number of sessions you require is going to depend on the severity and size of your veins and your goals. Each session should be scheduled about 3 to 4 weeks apart.

Is Sclerotherapy Right For You?

The great thing about Sclerotherapy is its ability to work on all different skin types and tones. This treatment can work on both superficial veins and deep, painful varicose veins. When you come in for a consultation with Dr. Draughn, he will take the time to thoroughly assess your veins.

The initial appointment will take about an hour and a half. You can expect to receive a venous leg ultrasound and have your legs measured and fitted for compression garments. Dr. Draughn’s staff will take detailed digital images of your legs and sit down with you to discuss a detailed treatment plan as well as the cost of treatment and insurance coverage.

We want you to leave our office feeling comfortable and knowledgeable about the sclerotherapy procedure, so we encourage you to ask questions during your visit with Dr. Draughn. You don’t have to live with unattractive or embarrassing spider and varicose veins anymore.
